Hi RAAM Fans ...

******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
On I8 in Arizona and on I10 in New Mexico, all riders must ride on the
shoulder even if it looks unrideable. Nick reports you may need to use your Mountain
Bike if necessary. If you do not ride on the shoulder, you will receive a
severe time penalty or be disqualified without warning. These states could
cancel RAAM if anyone is caught riding in the lane with traffic.

******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
In Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, the RAAM Headquarters Toll Free phone
number may not work. Here is a work around:
Dial 10-10-ATT-0
This will get you to an AT&T Operator who will dial the call at no charge to
you.

Hot Item -- Gerry Tatrai, The Wonder From Down Under (Australia), has extended
his lead over Seana Hogan in Second Place to about 3 Hours, at Time Station 14
(Alamogordo, NM), 868 miles into the race. Gerry has actually made it to Time
Station 15 in Mayhill, New Mexico as of this report in First Place. As
previously reported, the Deputy Commander from the State of New Mexico
delivered on his promise for a Fireworks show for both Gerry and Seana as the crossed
into New Mexico!!

Hot Item -- In my previous E-Mail, I was comparing Gerry Tatrai's Stellar
performance here to Pete Penesyre's 1986 RAAM where he had a Total Average
Speed of 15.7 MPH. Since the last update, Gerry has ridden another 221 Miles
and has kept his Total Average Speed at 15.7 MPH!! Seana's Total Average Speed is an
incredible 15.0 MPH!! Both are riding extremely well.

Hot Item -- Seana Hogan continues in 2nd place -- ahead of all of the other
men!! Seana is absolutely amazing!! I previously reported that she always
rides with a large 56 Tooth Chainring but I was incorrect: it's a 57 Tooth Big
Ring on there!! She leads Tom Buckley in 3rd place by about 30 minutes.

Hot Item -- Tom Buckley has moved back into 3rd place, leading the next 4
riders by a total gap of only 2 hours. This entire group is jockeying for position.

Extremely Hot Item -- Rob Kish is on the move. He has moved up from 9th Place
to 4th Place and is only 1 Hour behind Tom Buckley in 3rd Place.

Hot Item -- It appears that Paul Solon and Steve Born are neck and neck
battling it out. Only 10 minutes separated the two at Time Station 13!!

Hot Item -- I have started uploading my RAAM Start Line Photos. Go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to 1998 Race Across America Start Line Photos. This is definitely a work
in progress and much more will follow there. Boy, I sure wish I had a cool
Casio Camera and knew as much about HTML as Nick does -- his Web Pages are
Masterpieces at:
http://www.RAAMOnline.com

Hot Item -- Let's talk about the Rookies.

Mark Patten is from Saratoga, California and is in 6th Place.

Harold Trease from Jemez Springs, New Mexico is in 13th place.

Andreas Clavedetscher from Liechenstein is in 5th place.

Andrew Bohannon from Sunnyvale, California is in 11th place.

Rick Anderson from Woodside, California is currently in 12th place.

Hansgeorg Haus from Permasens, Germany, is currently in 15th place.

Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho is currently in 16th place.

Charlie Liskey from Somis, California is in 17th place.

Bernie Comeau from Ottawa, Canada is in 20th place.

Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching continues to be
recovering from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 12th to 10th
Place. He is currently about 100 Miles behind the leaders.

Hot Item -- 1989 Winner Paul Solon has moved down from 7th Place to 8th place.

Hot Item -- 1996 Winner Danny Chew has moved up from 10th place to 9th place.

Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team Secure Horizons has extended their lead
over Team 70+ to about 4 Hours. It is interesting to note that these Great
Old Guys are now starting to pass more and more of the Solo Riders -- even though
they're old, doesn't mean they're slow!! Of course, the Old Guys get a break
in the action as they have four guys on their teams.

Interesting Item -- Team Secure Horizons has passed Paul Solon on the road.
Not bad for Four Old Guys!!

Hot Item -- Aldo Calandro received a 5 minute Time Penalty for Crew following
rider and a 15 minute Time Penalty for caravanning behind the rider.

Hot Item -- Unfortunately, Tomas Celta has dropped out due to Heat Exhaustion,
location was not given. He made it through Time Station 1.

Hot Item -- Unfortunately, Bob Kimber has dropped from the race outside of
Time Station 8 in Superior, Arizona. Reason was not given.

Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print
well. I have corrected the column headings. These results may not line up on your
CRT because of the Proportional Font being used. Copy them from here and Paste
them into your Word Processor with a Courier font and they will appear in columns.
Specifically, if you are using Windows 95 and Microsoft Word, do the
following:
1. In your E-Mail program, click in the body of the E-Mail and press CTRL+A
to
"Select All" of this text. (I'm a keyboard kind of guy:) :) )
2. Press CTRL+C to "Copy" this text to the Windows Clipboard.
3. Press Start and Load Microsoft Word.
4. Change the Font to Courier and the Font Size to 11.
5. Click in the body of the empty document and press CTRL+V to Paste this E-
Mail into Microsoft Word. Voila: the columns should line up.
6. To Print these results:
    A. ALT-F for the File Menu
    B. U for Page Setup
    C. Take the Left and Right Margin to the lowest numbers allowable. For
instance, try 0 and 0. Word will come back and ask you if you want these to
be fixed - say Yes and it will give you the minimum margins for your printer.
    D. CTRL+P to Print
Now that wasn't so hard was it?

All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR
Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if you
don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what
each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
